My work deals with the perception of being present in any given moment. By using the almost invisible, tactile qualities of hair and thread, I try to convey an intimate feeling and direct attention to the physical body. I construct notions of reality. The body is more intelligent than we know. We open a spiritual inner journey through sensory and physical experience. When people have an awareness of every moment by full use of the senses, time is the present, it indicates eternity, the Now.
Our mind is an illusion of the self. We perceive everything in the world, we think about it, we have an opinion, and we have a mind that does not equate thinking with being. We judge things and the present through the eye of the past. It distorts the true being of self. I keep trying to transform the invisible thoughts of my mind into my physical art works. Watching the almost invisible movement of the hair and thread sculptures allow the viewer to disidentify from their mind.
I am interested in creating empty space to prompt people to slow down or pause. The architectural space created by white, emptiness, stillness and seamlessness symbolizes timelessness and infinity to me. When people are in the space, they easily lose their orientation, and it makes them focus inward instead of paying attention to a situation or the surroundings. The mind also loses power in this space. There is no awareness of past and future.
Therefore, when the viewers see my video, photography, sculpture, performance and installation works, they metaphorically can feel the “Now,” physically and emotionally. They can explore the experience of intimate and visceral images, enter the inner body, see the mind, and transform time into an awareness of the present. This is a threshold of “Being.”
